8 Odd Uses for Basil

If you have an aquaponic garden, you probably have basil.  You probably have more basil than you have ideas for its uses.  Here are 8 things you might not have considered.

Basil has antimicrobial properties.  Mix dried basil with baby powder, powered zeolite, or cornstarch for a foot powder that will absorb moisture and help control odor.

Basil imparts a savory flavor to sweets without overpowering.  To any basic "sandie" cookie recipe, add 2 teaspoons of finely crushed basil.  People will beg you for your secret ingredient.

Basil makes a great marinade for chicken.  Put fresh basil and garlic in your blender with either a little olive oil or 1/4 cup yogurt for a fresh tasting marinade for chicken.

Basil is a member of the mint family.  You can swap it out for mint in many drink recipes.  For a refreshing lemonade, muddle a few leaves of basil in the glass before adding lemonade.  For a real kick, muddle basil with a small amount of sugar, add two shots vodka and top with lemonade.  Bet you never thought of basil like that!

Basil is a must have in a caprese salad.  But, what about basil in a leafy green salad?  Just toss a few leaves of basil in with your lettuce, tomato and cucumber and dress with oil and balsamic vinegar.  Yummy!

Basil likes berries.  Toss your blueberries or strawberries with a chiffonade of basil and a dusting of XXX sugar for an out of this world fruit salad.

Basil is an anti-inflammatory.  Basil contains eugenol.  This blocks the activity of cyclooxygenase in much the same way NSAIDs work.  If you have any inflammatory disease, put fresh basil in everything..including your Cheerios!

Basil is good for your eyes!  You don't have to eat carrots for your eyes.  Basil is loaded with Vitamin A, which helps your night vision, and lutein to help ward off macular generation
